When 20th Century Fox offered to send me a copy of the first season of Glee to review, I jumped at the opportunity. I had seen a couple of episodes here and there, and I had mixed feelings about what I saw. I thought it'd be great to have the opportunity to sit down and watch the show and season start to finish. And watch it, I did. My husband is now a bona fide "gleek," I think, though, really, he may just have a thing for Heather Morris, a former back-up dancer for Beyonce who plays Brittany Pierce, the dumbest blonde cheerleader . Actually, she's my favorite character on the show, too; her wry (dim)wit is really funny. But I digress. Why should you or me watch Glee?
In my husband's and my view, it's a good way to get your finger on the pulse of high school life these days. We're not that old -- late-30s -- but my, how things have changed. Kids tell me they've changed in some of the ways Glee represents; there's more casual sex, more experimentation, more bullying. I believe it.
And because I believe it, in a million years, I would not let my ten year-old watch this show. It's a good thing she's not its intended audience, right? BUT... a ton of her friends watch it: friends who show up at school and talk about the pregnant cheerleader, the girl-on-girl scene, the locker room taunts. And frankly, at ten, they don't know what to make of it. And neither do I. I don't know whether to be in awe of the show's progressivism or disgusted that it's not on later at night and laden with warnings. (Side note: If you're curious about some shows your kids watch, wondering whether or not they're age-appropriate, Common Sense Media is often a good place to look. Here's Glee's rating, which is 13+.) I also have had a few words with a few parents about talking with their kids about what's "shareable" at school and what's not. Ahem.
Other content aside, what I think draws a lot of people into the show is the singing and, frankly, it's good -- great, even, when guest stars like Kristin Chenoweth are on it. If you like musicals, you'll love Glee.
At the end of the Season One review, we're watching Season Two, and we're enjoying it -- as adults. It's not the type of show my husband and I typically watch -- we're more the crime drama (CSI, etc.) types -- so it's refreshing, too.
Now the good part:
Would you like your own copy of Season One of Glee?
Thanks to Fox, I have a copy to give away! You can enter up to two times: once by leaving a comment below, and once by tweeting a link to this giveaway with the hashtag #goodstuffrox. We'll do what we always do (and I'll try to remember to take a pic this time): we'll write your name on a slip, place it in a lucky leprechaun's hat, and, this time (since it's a grown-up giveaway), the Guv (my husband) will draw the winner. You have until the next episode of Glee to enter -- which, by my TV listings, is Tuesday, November 9 at 8 p.m. PST.
Good luck!
P.S. Next up: Season One of Modern Family
Disclaimer: My family received a free copy of "Glee" from Fox. I did not commit to reviewing this TV show positively and have not been compensated otherwise for this review. I'm grateful to Fox for providing me the opportunity to give Glee away to one of my lucky readers -- thanks!
I love Glee! My favorite episode last season was when Kurt sang and danced to "Single Ladies" with Tina & Britney in his basement. It was hilarious!

Cool! I find this show to be entertaining (would have to agree with the "Guv", except I have more of a thing for Lea Michele! :-) But the show is fun! Please count me in! Thanks

ME, ME, ME. This is Mackenzie's FAVORITE show. I did tell her she can't watch season 2, though - it's gotten too grown up for her.

GLEE is such a great show. I was hooked by the first verse of "Don't Stop Believin'" song. I love seeing what song they will pick next. I am such an 80's tune junkie, so I hope they have more in store in season 2.
Oh my, without giving too much away, on season 2, I just have to say I swooned over Will singing "Sailing" by Christopher Cross.
Thanks again for the opportunity for this awesome dvd. It is definitely a classic.
